Our hazardous-location explosion-proof cord reels deliver certified power to classified areas and keep the cable retracted, protected, and off the floor between uses. Class I Division 1 rated and built to reduce trip hazards where ignition sources must be controlled.
How to select the right hazardous location explosion-proof cord reel
Start with the classification of the space where the reel will hang - it decides everything else. Under NEC Article 500, a Class I area is either Division 1 or Division 2, and equipment that can arc has to match. KH Industries hazardous location explosion-proof cord reels are certified for Class I Division 1, the more stringent of the two.
Area Classification
Under NEC Article 500, a Class I area is either Division 1 (ignitable atmosphere present in normal operation) or Division 2 (present only in a fault). KH Industries reels are certified for Class I Division 1 - Groups C and D gases, Groups E, F and G dusts, and Class III fibers - and UL Listed.
Because a Division 1 reel also satisfies Division 2 requirements, it provides flexibility if operating conditions or facility classifications change in the future.
Amperage, Cable & Voltage
Match amperage and cable to your connected load. Standard configurations are available in ratings from 10A to 20A at 600 VAC with 16 to 12 AWG SOOW cable in 3 or 4 conductors - 16/3 or 16/4 (10A), 14/3 or 14/4 (15A), and 12/3 or 12/4 (20A).
SOOW cable is commonly specified for these industrial applications because it meets NEC requirements for extra-hard-usage flexible cord. Standard cord lengths are 20 ft and 50 ft, with custom lengths available on request.
Payout, Enclosure & Termination
Choose positive-lock ratchet payout for a fixed working length, or constant tension to keep the cable managed for moving equipment - both reduce trip hazards. Enclosures are NEMA 4 rated for wet and dust environments, with 100% steel construction.
Reels are supplied blunt-cut for hard-wiring or pre-wired to a hazardous-rated device, helping ensure the installation aligns with applicable NEC requirements on cord and receptacle use in Division 1.
When the area is classified, spec the right hazardous location explosion-proof cord reel
KH Industries hazardous location explosion-proof cord reels are certified for Class I Division 1 hazardous locations across oil and gas, chemical processing, mining, and petrochemical operations. UL Listed, 600V, NEMA 4 rated, and Made in the USA, in standard or custom configurations. If you don't see exactly what you need, KH Industries can configure it to your specs.
Classified-area installations often require documentation during specification, inspection, and maintenance. KH Industries provides product sell sheets, installation guides, product drawings, and applicable certification information for hazardous location cord reels. BABAA-compliant configurations and supporting documentation are also available when required for qualifying projects.
Standard configurations are often the fastest option when your application matches the available amperage, cord length, conductor count, and termination options. If your project requires different cable specifications, custom lengths, unique terminations, or project-specific certifications, KH Industries can configure a reel to meet those requirements.
Selecting the correct hazardous location cord reel starts with confirming the area classification, electrical load, required cable length, conductor count, and preferred termination method. Providing these details allows KH Industries to recommend a certified reel configuration appropriate for your installation and include the specification with your quotation. Request a Quote now.
Yes. Many hazardous location explosion-proof cord reel configurations are available as individual units for evaluation before a larger purchase. Whether you're validating a new installation or standardizing equipment across multiple facilities, KH Industries can recommend the most appropriate configuration for your classified environment.
A Class I Division 1 reel is designed for the more stringent classification and can generally be used in Class I Division 2 locations. However, the correct selection should always be based on the area's hazardous location classification, applicable electrical codes, and your facility's engineering requirements. KH Industries can help verify the appropriate configuration before ordering.
