KH Industries, a manufacturer of portable lighting and temporary power solutions, is seeking an innovative and detail-oriented Mechanical Design Engineer to join our organization.
We have the ability to design and build customized solutions for utilities, airlines and other industrial applications.
As the Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for carrying out a variety of engineering duties including the research, design and manufacturability of new products. This role involves collaborating across departments to bring innovative product concepts to life, from initial ideation to production.
Responsibilities and Duties are as follows:
New Product Development:
- Conduct Design Analysis: Perform thorough evaluations of existing products and provide recommendations for improvements to enhance performance, quality, and cost-efficiency.
- Develop and Design New Products: Innovate and design new products within the scope of existing product lines, ensuring they meet market demands, customer needs and company standards.
- Conduct Feasibility Studies: Assess design options and recommend solutions both internally and to our customer base.
Technical Design:
- 3D Modeling and Testing: Utilize 3D modeling software (SolidWorks) to create and assess product designs. Conduct rigorous testing to validate design functionality and reliability.
- Design for Manufacturability: Ensure all designs are optimized for manufacturability using KH Industries equipment, streamlining production processes and reducing costs.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Create Technical Documentation: Generate detailed drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs) for both new and updated product designs, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
- Accurately Input and Review Data into Business System: Input and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) in the company’s internal business system, ensuring all components, quantities, and specifications are correctly documented. Regularly update and review this data to reflect design changes, requirements and material substitutions.
Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with mold design, machine shop, and manufacturing teams to transition new products from design to production, ensuring seamless integration and execution.
- Manage Projects Independently: Lead and manage projects autonomously, from initial concept through to final production, maintaining constant communication with stakeholders and meeting project deadlines.
Required Experience and Skills:
- General knowledge of NRTL (UL, CSA and ETL) requirements.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including MS Office Suite, CAD software (preferably SolidWorks), and ERP/MRP systems.
- Ability to read, understand and create technical drawings and material specifications.
- Demonstrated aptitude for mechanical design, with a focus on innovative and functional solutions.
- Strong experience in designing for plastic components, including material selection and manufacturability considerations.
- 3–5 years of hands-on experience in design engineering, preferably within a manufacturing or product development environment.
Education:
- Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or related field.
Physical work environment will require:
- Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. or heavier.
- Occasional pushing, pulling or handling of materials.
